the new england town meeting is a form of direct democracy


some things the council members considered at the tuesday, may 4th council meeting - held at the van buren fire station -  were:


- fire department budget (c i p means capital improvement plan) at minute 2:30 in video 1


- a new snow plow truck (video 1 at minute 18:10, vote at minute 2:25 video 2) for the highway department that would cost $188,938 (with an 8% price increase if the order is not confirmed in june)


- recreation department (video 2 minute 5:30) resurfacing the tennis courts at the community center and fixing the basketball backboards there


- designating funds (up to $50,000) for a community van to shuttle people who don't have transportation to town events and shopping (video 3 at minute 11:30)


- whether to designate funds to recreate the economic development director position (minute 27:19 on video 3)  which would allow nancy to free up time by the hiring a full time grant writer to apply for the great amount of new federal and state grants created by the covid stimuluses


- creating a park with the capital fund or redevelopment funds to replace three buildings that are collapsing at bridge street and main street

in the videos below paul nadeau is the chairman for the meeting and he is seated on the far left, john beaulieu is seated next to paul on paul's left and at the next table is peter madore - and on peter's left is maurice corbin 


the town manager/defacto economic development supervisor nancy troeger is seated by herself on maurice's left and deputy town manager/bookkeeper/town constable luke dyer is seated in front of and facing nancy, and for the fire department budget fire chief brian caron is seated to luke's right facing nancy and leaves after his report

- minutes of previous town council meetings


revenue sharing from the state to maine towns  was scheduled to be eliminated in 2020 but it was reinstated in the 2020 budget at 3% and will be increased in 2021 to 3.75%, even tho maine is legally required to set aside 5% of maine state revenue for sharing to municipalities

van buren's police department, like a plethora of rural police departments across the nation, was disbanded due to staffing shortages on december 6th, 2020 freeing up $200,000 / year in the town budget
